New WiFi Thermostat Feature Gives Homeowners Unprecedented Transparency
Honeywell announced that starting this year, homeowners with one of their WiFi enabled thermostats will receive a monthly energy report.
This new feature gives homeowners a peek behind the curtain when it comes to their home’s energy expenditure. When you register your device you’ll receive an email detailing your energy use, comparing it with past months and years, and even tips on how to save more money next month.
While many technologies have allowed homeowners to save significant amounts of money on energy expenses, this is perhaps the simplest to use and take advantage of.
How a Honeywell Wifi Thermostat Energy Report Works
After installing and registering your thermostat, the device will collect and send data including your heating and cooling usage, weather data, and more to Honeywell via the WiFi signal. It’s compiled, compared to last month’s or last year’s data, and sent to you in a way that is incredibly simple to analyze.
They even compare your home energy use with similar homes in your area to show you how you are stacking up!
At the very top of your report is some basic information explaining what month it is for, and which household. There’s not much to go over in the first segment, but it’s worth noting that it’s a welcome feature for those who have multiple connected properties sharing the same email address.

Trends
Next, the report gives you a brief overview of your trends. According to the manufacturer’s FAQ, users who have had the device operating for less than one year will have their usage compared to the prior month (beginning two months after activation). After the first full year, it will always compare to the same month of last year.
By showing you your trends, combined with the weather data, you get a look at how you use your system, and how much outside temperatures affect your energy consumption. If this information seems a little vague, don’t worry. It’s just getting started.
Immediately following your trends overview, you are provided a detailed breakdown of your system’s usage, room by room. This includes precisely how much time your heating and air conditioning ran, the average temperatures of your rooms while you are home and away, and the weather data.
You can imagine that it would be pretty easy to spot any inefficiencies in the way you are using your system with just a brief look at this graph.
For example, if you were running your system too much while you weren’t even home, you would spot that instantly.
Due to the thermostat programming and smartphone functions, you can remedy the problem in minutes, and enjoy your lower bill next month.
Home Efficiency
The next segment gives your home an overall efficiency rating on a scale of lower to higher.
According to the manufacturer, they calculate this score by measuring how well your home maintains its temperature when outside temperatures are hot or cold. It then compares this data to similar homes in your area to come up with a score. There are many factors that affect your home’s temperature retention and they can’t all be measured by the system.

While the system can’t tell you exactly why your home might be less efficient than similar homes, it makes you aware that there is an issue. You can then make improvements to your home, and track it month-to-month and year-to-year to see what is working and what isn’t.
