Whether you’re dealing with extreme heat in North Augusta or the surrounding area or facing freezing temperatures, you know that there’s a problem with either your heating or cooling system.
In this post, we’re breaking down some of the most common heater problems.
Whether your central heat is not working, or if you need assistance with gas furnace troubleshooting, be sure to read on to learn how to fix them.
1. You Smell Burning/Sulfur
A smell like burning, sulfur, or rotten eggs around your heater or vents is one of the most common symptoms.
Before you call a repair technician, clean the system’s exterior. Often your heater is just burning up dust, dirt, and other debris. This is especially true at the beginning of the winter season when the heat comes on for the first time after months of sitting idle.
Get in touch with a heating professional to ensure everything is working safely. If the smell doesn’t go away after one or two heating cycles, your system could have more serious problems like faulty wiring. Get in touch with a heating professional to ensure everything is working safely.
2. You’ve Spotted Mold
Especially if you’re dealing with a wet season, according to Riley Plumbing Company, it’s easy for that moisture to build up into your HVAC system.
Because mold can be hazardous to your health, we suggest getting in touch with an experienced heating repair professional for a proper cleaning.
3. Your Energy Bills Have Increased
If you notice a sudden spike in your energy bills, your heater could be to blame.
If your energy bills are significantly higher than last winter, it could be a sign that something is preventing the system from operating at peak efficiency.
Try replacing your filter first. In many cases, something as simple as a dirty filter can have a significant impact on your energy expenses.
If you recently changed the filter and the problem persists, get in touch with a professional to fully diagnose the issue.
4. Your Vents Produce Cold Air
The most obvious sign something is wrong with your heater is cold air coming from the vents. Many issues could be causing this.
First, make sure the thermostat is set to “auto” instead of “fan,” as the fan will always blow out cold air. Next, consider replacing your air filter, as a buildup of dirt could be to blame.
You should also check out the pilot light if you’re dealing with gas furnace not working. Make sure it is turned on. If it isn’t, turning it on will fix the problem.
Lastly, there could be a problem with your ductwork. In this case, or if you still can’t identify the cause, we suggest you call your local HVAC repair provider.
Know When to Call a Professional
When your heat isn’t working, it’s essential to know when you can address the problem yourself and when to call a professional. Nobody wants to waste their hard-earned dollars on a diagnostic that amounts to changing an air filter. On the other hand, completing certain repairs yourself can be unsafe or risk further damage to your system. We hope this article helps you identify which issues can be handled yourself, and well to call in the cavalry.

“I called 6 other companies when my AC stopped pushing air at 5PM. None of them seemed to want my business. When I got to Sig Cox, the guy who answered the phone was polite, knowledgeable, and was even trouble shooting with me before sending someone out. The agent got to my house in 30 minutes, troubleshoot, and fixed the problem in another 30. He even topped off the freon for free. The pricing was definitely agreeable. You’d get charged the same or more with any other company. Some of the best customer service I have seen. You should absolutely consider Sig Cox for you HVAC problems, I won’t be looking anywhere else.”

“These people are amazing. After hiring Sig Cox the first time to fix my HVAC unit about a year ago, I was more than happy, to say the least. Then about a week ago I had them install a new HVAC unit for me. This is by far the best a/c repair company in Augusta GA. They are professional, timely, and really take care of their customers. I highly recommend them and proudly give them an A+ rating! Thank you all so much!”

“This company did some work for my mother-in-law, of which she was quite pleased, so she recommended them to us. We had a downstairs unit that just wasn’t putting out any cool air. They came by post haste and assessed the unit, gratis. Of course it was a compressor failure so we had to make the hard decision to buy a new unit or fix what we had. The advice we got from our man on the scene was honest and sincere.
Since we had an older unit that used the phased out Freon and compressors are ugh, expensive, we went with a new unit. We decided on the Amana since it had a lifetime warranty on the compressor and rated well in Consumer Reports.
A month later the other unit failed and we replaced that as well. Six Cog worked with us on the price, we were never hassled on the payment, nor did they demand any payment on the spot and never did I feel pressured into anything. The install was smooth, fast and highly professional. Both units fired up, granted a month apart, and the house was cool almost immediately.
This company has a great reputation from what I can garner in the community, and I’m here to tell you that I recommend them highly as well. Please note that this is first recommendation I have ever put online.”

My air conditiong system went out, Sig Cox was recommended so I called them. Technician Andrew came out, was on time, and he properly diagnosed the problem. He had the part ordered. When the part came in, Nolan installed the part perfectly. Both technicians were very professional and knowledgeable. I even talked to the owner of the company who is involve day-to-day with his company. Very nice people to deal and they really go beyond what’s expected to help you get things fixed.
