What is a Ductless Mini-Split System?

Ductless mini-split HVAC systems are gaining popularity, but is it the right choice of system for your home? Find out more.

A ductless mini-split system (sometimes just called a mini-split) is typically a wall-mounted heat pump or air conditioner. As the name implies, it can heat or cool a space without any ductwork. Because of this, it is a popular choice for older homes without existing ductwork or residential or commercial buildings where it would not be feasible or affordable to install the appropriate ductwork for a central air conditioner.

In this article, we are going to discuss how a ductless mini-split system works and the advantages it offers to home and business owners over other alternatives.

How Does a Ductless Mini-Split Work?

Just like a central air conditioner, a ductless mini-split system consists of an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor.

A central air conditioning system collects the air in one central location, usually an attic or closet. The air handler cools the air and distributes it throughout the house through the ductwork.

A ductless mini-split system is physically located in the room that it is cooling, eliminating the need for the ductwork. One or multiple air handlers can be connected to one outdoor compressor.

What are the Advantages of a Ductless System?

Residential Mini Split

Ductless systems have several advantages over central air units for some homes and businesses.

No Need to Install Ductwork

The most obvious advantage is the fact that you do not need to install ductwork. Homeowners looking for a heating and cooling system for a single room that is not supported by existing ductwork, or those living in buildings that cannot support new ductwork should consider a mini-split system.

Energy Efficiency

Ductless mini-split systems are more energy efficient than central air units. This increased efficiency is due to a significant portion of your home’s energy waste takes place within the ductwork. According to Energy.gov, approximately 30% of your home’s energy waste occurs within the ductwork.

Easy Zoning

Because each room has its own unit, mini-splits are an affordable alternative to those seeking a zoned heating and cooling system. Every room with a ductless system will have its own thermostat, allowing you to control the temperature in individual rooms.

Heating & Cooling

Most ductless systems are heat pumps, which can provide both heating and air conditioning, thereby eliminating the need for a separate heating unit.

What are the Disadvantages of a Ductless System?

Cost

If you are installing a ductless system throughout the entire house, the initial cost can be two to three times greater than a central air system. You will recoup some of the initial expenses through lower electric bills, but you might be looking at many years before breaking even. If you are concerned about the lifetime expenses involved with a mini-split system, contact your local HVAC provider.

Aesthetics

Because these units are located in the rooms which they are heating or cooling, some home or business owners might not like the look of the unit.

Is a Ductless System Right for You?

If you are wondering whether a ductless system is the right choice for your home or commercial property, don’t hesitate to get in touch with an expert HVAC contractor. They can help you determine whether the benefits outweigh the costs and give you accurate pricing information.

best hvac company in Augusta
“I called 6 other companies when my AC stopped pushing air at 5PM. None of them seemed to want my business. When I got to Sig Cox, the guy who answered the phone was polite, knowledgeable, and was even trouble shooting with me before sending someone out. The agent got to my house in 30 minutes, troubleshoot, and fixed the problem in another 30. He even topped off the freon for free. The pricing was definitely agreeable. You’d get charged the same or more with any other company. Some of the best customer service I have seen. You should absolutely consider Sig Cox for you HVAC problems, I won’t be looking anywhere else.”

“These people are amazing. After hiring Sig Cox the first time to fix my HVAC unit about a year ago, I was more than happy, to say the least. Then about a week ago I had them install a new HVAC unit for me. This is by far the best a/c repair company in Augusta GA. They are professional, timely, and really take care of their customers. I highly recommend them and proudly give them an A+ rating! Thank you all so much!”

“This company did some work for my mother-in-law, of which she was quite pleased, so she recommended them to us. We had a downstairs unit that just wasn’t putting out any cool air. They came by post haste and assessed the unit, gratis. Of course it was a compressor failure so we had to make the hard decision to buy a new unit or fix what we had. The advice we got from our man on the scene was honest and sincere.
Since we had an older unit that used the phased out Freon and compressors are ugh, expensive, we went with a new unit. We decided on the Amana since it had a lifetime warranty on the compressor and rated well in Consumer Reports.
A month later the other unit failed and we replaced that as well. Six Cog worked with us on the price, we were never hassled on the payment, nor did they demand any payment on the spot and never did I feel pressured into anything. The install was smooth, fast and highly professional. Both units fired up, granted a month apart, and the house was cool almost immediately.
This company has a great reputation from what I can garner in the community, and I’m here to tell you that I recommend them highly as well. Please note that this is first recommendation I have ever put online.”

My air conditiong system went out, Sig Cox was recommended so I called them. Technician Andrew came out, was on time, and he properly diagnosed the problem. He had the part ordered. When the part came in, Nolan installed the part perfectly. Both technicians were very professional and knowledgeable. I even talked to the owner of the company who is involve day-to-day with his company. Very nice people to deal and they really go beyond what’s expected to help you get things fixed. I highly recommend Sig Cox!! Ask for Andrew or Nolan, they know what they’re doing!!
